Oficina da Terra Crua (Bureau of the Raw Earth).

The Architecture atelier SLA developed research on construction with raw earth and undertakes projects and experiments in the area of ecological architecture. Cork therefore enters as a material that could be incorporated with earth in ‘dry construction’ methods. A collection network was created for “natural imperishable materials”.

The implementation of the CSR system brought about the creation of a Cork Stopper Collection Network: "we establish contact by telephone with the collection points, we have a voluntary network in Portugal". The costs are taken onboard by SLA.

The network covers over 70 collection points distributed in the municipalities of Lisbon, Oeiras, Sintra, Vila Franca de Xira, Alvito, Ferreira do Alentejo, Beja, Mértola, Sines, Odemira and Lagos, at private and public establishments such as restaurants and schools.

Financial aid (to pay half the costs): Luso-American Foundation for Development (in 2006), from Vertec (in 2007) and REN (2008) “We have agreements with carpenters and with centres for people with reduced mobility. We will soon sign a protocol”.

Start date:

November 2005, with cork stoppers, nut, almond and hazelnut shells. “We have continued only with the cork stoppers”.

How much:

About 25 tons.

"For the time being there are only costs associated with collection and design, we still have to get patents".
